A track and field stadium and a velodrome were built, and the city began billing itself as the nation?s amateur sports capital. It hosted the Pan Am Games in 1987. The NCAA?s Final Four was played in Indianapolis in 1980. Five men?s and one women?s Final Four have been held there since. The NCAA, the National Federation of State High School Associations, and the governing bodies of seven sports - including track and field and gymnastics - are all based in Indianapolis.

As the city?s sports reputation grew, it gained new life at its heart.

Before the sports renaissance, there were few reasons to stay in the heart of the city after businesses closed. For half a century, the city?s biggest event was the Indianapolis 500, which attracts more than a quarter-million fans each Memorial Day weekend. But there was little nightlife, and even fewer places to stay.

Now, the city that had fewer than 500 hotel rooms downtown in 1970 has more than 6,500, and about a dozen new hotels have opened in the past decade, including a 1,000-room JW Marriott. The number of downtown restaurants and bars has doubled to 300 in the past 10 years, and there are more than 200 shops, according to Indianapolis Downtown Inc., the city?s tourism agency.

On any given night, visitors can travel just a few blocks to see the Pacers at Banker?s Life Fieldhouse, stage productions at the Indiana Repertory Theatre or live music at the Old National Centre or White River State Park. The downtown canal walk offers pedal boats, gondolas, and bicycles for rent.

Thousands of residents have embraced downtown living, and more than 3,200 houses, condominiums, and apartments are expected to be under construction or completed within five years.

Tourism officials say visits to downtown attractions have increased 83 percent since 1994.

The numbers don?t surprise Don Ruark, a 78-year-old retiree from Fillmore, Ind., who recalls the city?s quiet days when he worked at drugmaker Eli Lilly & Co.

?What?s happened here has really been an awakening,?? Ruark said. ?If word hasn?t gotten out about Indianapolis, it should.??

A Super Bowl had still seemed out of reach to many. The city lost out to Minneapolis for the 1992 game and to Dallas for 2011.

Indiana University athletic director Fred Glass, president of Indianapolis?s 2011 bid committee, said the city was given little chance of hosting because it was a small-market city in a cold-weather climate. But the committee agreed this time that decades of transformation had paid off.

As all eyes turn to Indy this weekend - and despite naysayers who say the game is a one-time gift - city leaders already are thinking about future Super Bowls.

Parkway officials note the school day is pinched on both ends by bus schedules, class time, after-school activities, homework and family time.

For Parkway students like Zack Becker, the school day starts early. The Parkway North High School sophomore is in marching band.�During band season, the group met at 6:30 a.m. for practice, meaning Becker had to get up at 5:45 a.m. to get to school.

?I?m averaging six hours of sleep a night,? he said.

Fatigue affected Becker?s grades, which dropped from a 4.0 as a freshman to a 3.4 in his first semester.

Dr. John Spivey, a pediatricican and sleep medicine expert at Mercy Children?s Hospital said�should get about nine and a half hours of sleep a night.

Early to bed?

Getting teenagers to go to sleep earlier is no easy task, explained Spivey.

?Around age 12 to 14, when a child hits puberty, there?s a natural shift in their sleep clock,? he said. ?Their circadian rhythm, their internal clock, basically skips ahead two hours. Typically, a teenager really cannot go to bed at 8 o?clock. Their internal clocks are telling them to go to bed at 10 or 11 o?clock."

To get enough sleep, teens would need to sleep until 7 a.m., he said.

?Then, you?re fighting after-school activities, sports, jobs, social time, homework, family time,? Spivey said.

As a result, few teens get enough sleep during a school week, so they catch up on weekends, trying to repay the ?sleep debt.? However, sleeping until noon or 2 p.m. can further throw their circadian rhythm out of whack, Spivey said.

He pointed to a Stanford sleep study showing sleeping students simply did not perform well in school.

?It can affect your immune system, too,? Spivey said. ?It can affect your mood. Adolescents talk about changes in their moods. Add in hormone changes and you have mood swings.?

Katherine Wessling sends her daughter to Compton-Drew Middle School, a magnet school in the St. Louis School District. After class times moved to 7 a.m. this year, her 12-year-old daughter dropped out of all after-school activities because she was too tired.

Wessling also said that a principal told her it had nine more of its most serious disciplinary incidents after the time change.

Who?s on first?

Spivey said elementary students can and should go to bed at 8 or 8:30 a.m., and are awake and energetic at 6 a.m. after 10 hours of sleep.

�?It really makes sense for elementary school students to go to school first,? Spivey said.

There?s not universal agreement on that. It brings up issues with younger children waiting for buses while it?s still dark out, Snider said. After-school childcare becomes an issue, too.

Then again, Snider said teenagers can get into trouble in the unsupervised period before parents get home form work.�

?The research has been accumulating. There?s evidence that it?s bad education, bad for society and bad for equity,? she said. ?Disadvantaged students suffer twice as much as other students.?

Snider said a Brookings Institute study found that even when changing start times has a high upfront cost, investing the resources to alter schedules for buses and after-school activities can pay off.

An Air Force Academy study shows that students who start school after 8 a.m. perform better. It?s the equivalent of a poor teacher with an average teacher, the study found.

�?This isn?t just about student achievement,? Snider said. ?We?re doing long-term damage in terms of weight gain, depression and suicide.?

Feb. 1, 2012 -- A common sleep disorder is associated with an increased risk of symptomless but serious strokes called ?silent strokes,? German researchers report.

Sleep apnea, a condition marked by periodic interruptions in breathing during sleep, has been linked to an increased risk of strokes. But there hasn't been much research exploring the relationship between sleep apnea and silent strokes, says researcher Jessica Kepplinger, MD, of Dresden University Stroke Center at the University of Technology in Dresden, Germany.

So, Kepplinger and colleagues studied 56 men and women, aged 44 to 75 years, who?d had a stroke or mini-stroke known as a transient ischemic attack. All were given a screening tool that picks up changes in breathing during sleep.

Ninety-one percent periodically stopped breathing while they slept.

Then the men and women underwent brain imaging scans. Just over half had little areas of tissue death in the brain that had occurred in the past without a history of corresponding stroke symptoms -- evidence, Kepplinger tells WebMD, of silent stroke.

The more times a person stopped breathing during the night, the greater the likelihood of silent stroke, she says.

There was no comparison group, so researchers don't know how many people of the same ages and health status who don't have sleep apnea have had silent strokes.

Link Between Breathing and Stroke

MRI brain imaging studies suggest about 20% to 25% of people over age 60 have had a silent stroke, according to Harvard Medical School neurologist Steven Greenberg, MD, PhD. They have been linked to memory loss in some people, he says.

The study offers "good evidence linking" sleep apnea to silent stroke, Greenberg tells WebMD. But this is just an observation of an association between the two that needs further study, he says.

Greenberg moderated a news briefing to discuss the findings at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference.

The study is small and preliminary. But it poses a number of questions that deserve further research, says Harvard neurologist Lee Schwamm, MD.

"I think what we can say is that breathing problems are more common in stroke patients than suspected," he tells WebMD.

"But is abnormal breathing during sleep a long-term problem in these patients? Or will it go away? And is abnormal breathing a risk factor that leads to stroke? Or is it a consequence of stroke?" Schwamm asks.

Kepplinger plans further study. In the meantime, she says, all stroke patients should be screened for sleep apnea.�

These findings were presented at a medical conference. They should be considered preliminary as they have not yet undergone the "peer review" process, in which outside experts scrutinize the data prior to publication in a medical journal.

The risk of advanced prostate cancer was two- to threefold higher with severe or very severe sleep problems in the prospective cohort study presented here at the Genitourinary Cancers Symposium.

While these observational results couldn't address whether treating these men's sleep problems would reduce their prostate cancer risk, other findings suggest it might help, Sigurdardottir noted.

In one of the few prior studies looking at the impact of sleep disruption on prostate cancer risk, working the night shift was shown to have a bigger impact on prostate cancer risk the longer one kept that schedule, she pointed out.

So the implication is that "if you have a sleep problem for only a short period, like a couple of months, it's not going to affect your risk, but if you have it for 10 or 20 years, it's probably going to impact your risk," she told MedPage Today.

Both immune suppression and melatonin disruption have been hypothesized to promote cancer growth, the researchers noted.

However, reverse causation is just as likely if not a better explanation for the link, cautioned Adam Kibel, MD, chief of urology at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and chair of the conference steering committee.

"It could be that prostate cancer increases your risk of waking up at night," he told MedPage Today. "It could be their prostate is a little larger because they have cancer; therefore, they're having more trouble going to the bathroom."

While insomnia warrants treatment regardless, men who have trouble sleeping shouldn't be concerned about their prostate on the basis of this study alone, Kibel argued.

"If they're waking up because they're having trouble going to the bathroom, then they should see a urologist," he said.

The study included 2,102 men from the AGES-Reykjavik study who answered four questions about their sleep.

Among them, 8.7% reported severe problems falling and staying asleep, and 5.7% reported very severe such problems at baseline.

During an average five years of follow-up, 6.4% of the men were diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Compared with men who reported no sleep problems, the risk of prostate cancer adjusted for age, family history of prostate cancer, and other potential confounding factors was increased by 70% when severe sleep problems were present (hazard ratio 1.7, 95% confidence interval 1.0 to 2.9).

Overall prostate cancer risk was 2.1-fold more likely for those with "very severe" problems with falling and staying asleep (95% confidence interval 1.2 to 3.7).

For advanced prostate cancer, including stage T3 or worse and lethal disease, the risk was 2.1-fold higher with severe sleep problems and 3.2-fold elevated with very severe sleep disruption, though only statistically significant for the latter.

"It's quite a strong effect," Sigurdardottir concluded.

The study was supported by the Icelandic Research Fund, a Harvard Catalyst Award, the National Institute on Aging, and the Icelandic Cancer Registry.

The researchers reported having no conflicts of interest to disclose.

Kibel reported connections to Dendreon, Myriad Genetics, sanofi-aventis, and Forest Laboratories.

Twitter more tempting than sex and sleep, study says - CNET

What do you desire most right now? A drink? A cigarette? A nap? That hottie at the next table? Come on, be honest. What you really want to do this instant, if you haven't already done it, is to tweet the headline of this story.

You really thought I'd buy "coconut water" as an answer? I write for Crave, people.

In fact, perhaps the only group more tuned in to people's desires than our stable of writers is the team from the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business that conducted an experiment with more than 200 people to try to gauge what tempts them most.

Lead researcher Wilhelm Hofmann explained to the Guardian that the participants, located in the German city of Wurtzburg, were pinged seven times a day via their BlackBerrys and asked to report any desires they had experienced in the past 30 minutes, as well as the intensity of each want.

Sorting through the thousands of "desire episodes" reported, the team found that it was easier for people to resist more traditional temptations like coffee, alcohol, sex, work, or spending money than it was to spurn the yearning to tweet.

The researchers said the two basic urges necessary to further our survival as a species--namely sleep and sex--are probably still stronger desires for most people than the siren call of social media, but people find it "easier" to give in to the Twittersphere. The conjecture here is that checking and sending status updates is low-cost, low-risk, and easy to do from almost anywhere, unlike sleep and sex--except perhaps for the most shameless among us.

The problem, it seems to me, is that tweeting is so easy, there's no reason it can't be done while smoking, drinking, and yes, doing those other things, too. Not that you should try that at home. Just trust me on this one.

The study will soon be published in Psychological Science.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Severe sleep problems suggestive of insomnia are linked to prostate cancer risk among older men, researchers found.

Men with the most trouble sleeping were twice as likely to develop prostate cancer as those without any sleep disruptions, Lara G. Sigurdardottir, MD, of the University of Reykjavik, Iceland, and colleagues reported.

The risk of advanced prostate cancer was two- to threefold higher with severe or very severe sleep problems in the prospective cohort study presented here at the Genitourinary Cancers Symposium.

While these observational results couldn't address whether treating these men's sleep problems would reduce their prostate cancer risk, other findings suggest it might help, Sigurdardottir noted.

In one of the few prior studies looking at the impact of sleep disruption on prostate cancer risk, working the night shift was shown to have a bigger impact on prostate cancer risk the longer one kept that schedule, she pointed out.

So the implication is that "if you have a sleep problem for only a short period, like a couple of months, it's not going to affect your risk, but if you have it for 10 or 20 years, it's probably going to impact your risk," she told MedPage Today.

Feb. 1, 2012 -- A common sleep disorder is associated with an increased risk of symptomless but serious strokes called ?silent strokes,? German researchers report.

Sleep apnea, a condition marked by periodic interruptions in breathing during sleep, has been linked to an increased risk of strokes. But there hasn't been much research exploring the relationship between sleep apnea and silent strokes, says researcher Jessica Kepplinger, MD, of Dresden University Stroke Center at the University of Technology in Dresden, Germany.

So, Kepplinger and colleagues studied 56 men and women, aged 44 to 75 years, who?d had a stroke or mini-stroke known as a transient ischemic attack. All were given a screening tool that picks up changes in breathing during sleep.

Ninety-one percent periodically stopped breathing while they slept.

Then the men and women underwent brain imaging scans. Just over half had little areas of tissue death in the brain that had occurred in the past without a history of corresponding stroke symptoms -- evidence, Kepplinger tells WebMD, of silent stroke.

The more times a person stopped breathing during the night, the greater the likelihood of silent stroke, she says.

There was no comparison group, so researchers don't know how many people of the same ages and health status who don't have sleep apnea have had silent strokes.

Link Between Breathing and Stroke

MRI brain imaging studies suggest about 20% to 25% of people over age 60 have had a silent stroke, according to Harvard Medical School neurologist Steven Greenberg, MD, PhD. They have been linked to memory loss in some people, he says.

The study offers "good evidence linking" sleep apnea to silent stroke, Greenberg tells WebMD. But this is just an observation of an association between the two that needs further study, he says.

Greenberg moderated a news briefing to discuss the findings at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference.

The study is small and preliminary. But it poses a number of questions that deserve further research, says Harvard neurologist Lee Schwamm, MD.

"I think what we can say is that breathing problems are more common in stroke patients than suspected," he tells WebMD.

"But is abnormal breathing during sleep a long-term problem in these patients? Or will it go away? And is abnormal breathing a risk factor that leads to stroke? Or is it a consequence of stroke?" Schwamm asks.

Kepplinger plans further study. In the meantime, she says, all stroke patients should be screened for sleep apnea.�

These findings were presented at a medical conference. They should be considered preliminary as they have not yet undergone the "peer review" process, in which outside experts scrutinize the data prior to publication in a medical journal.
